This is an “open ride” so there will be other bikes along to make your Ducati look extra cool. For all the Best Snowy Riding, with None of The Hassle! Per the invite on the NSW DOC site
http://www.docnsw.org.au/item/366283 the general intention is that this is a five day ride over a non-double demerit weekend and includes a Sunday rest day sightseeing in Corryong (see
http://www.murrayriver.com.au/corryong/ and
http://www.travelvictoria.com.au/corryong/). So a “proper” holiday with the laid back pace and great riding you get on a typical Ducati Turismo, without all the costs! And enough fellow riders around to help out if needed.
There are two couples on Ducati ST’s leaving from Newcastle already, being myself & Kellie and Mal & Jenny - do I hear more, or any solos? Here’s all the info so you can decide if you want to join us. Just reply to this email with a yes or a maybe, and let me know your preference for the departure option, and we can decide what the plan is going to be. Everyone will need to sort out their own bookings – the full list of accommodation phone numbers are on the NSW DOC web page mentioned above.
Going down on Friday the most likely thing is to meet at the twin servos on the F3 for a 9am departure and do the 507km to Bermagui in the day to arrive mid arvo for a laze around the town. We would simply do the F3 / Hume to Pheasants Nest which knocks 150km off, then it is 93km of quiet back roads to Marulan, 98km of the same to Braidwood, 60km down the lovely Kings Hwy then 103km down the Princes Hwy to Bermagui. A grand total of 559km from Charlestown.
Alternately we could do what we’ve done a couple of times before which has worked out brilliantly, and take an early mark to leave Newcastle Thursday arvo around 4:30pm and head to Wentworth Falls overnight (207km from Charlestown), staying at the majestic but cheap Grandview hotel (see
http://thegrandviewhotel.com/accommodation). So we are in “holiday mode” immediately, have got some “ride fitness” under our belt and can enjoy the delightful Oberon road down to Goulburn on the Friday instead of having to do the hack work on the Freeway. From Wentworth Falls to Bermagui is 473km of lovely country riding all the way.
Once we know who’s coming we can make a decision on which way to go to Bermagui. So please let me know your preference when you reply to this email to say you’re coming, OK?
For Saturday it is Bermagui to Corryong
via Bega (62km); Candelo (85km); Bombala (159km); Dalghety (231km); Jindabyne (262km); Thredbo (298km); Khancoban (373km); Corryong (399km)
or
via Bemboka (84km); Nimmitabel (123km); 10km dirt; Dalghety (170km); Jindabyne (201km); Thredbo (237km); Khancoban (312km); Corryong (338km)
My preference is to go via Candelo as they are such beautiful open winding roads around there. The Nimmitabel option with dirt is of course slightly shorter, and the dirt was good quality last time I was on it, but honestly why go so close to the Candelo roads and not take them in?
For Sunday apparently a tradition started some years ago whereby most have a rest day sightseeing but a couple of people really do this: “
Sundowners' ride starting at dawn, through to the Cann River/Mt Hotham and back”. That is 831km of 50% hard riding and I for one don’t see the point! If people are interested in a Sunday ride (and I may be) I would like to propose an alternate which is 603km being Corryong to Tintaldra, along the river & up the Granya Gap, across to Kiewa and down the west side of the river, up the Tawonga Pass, do the loop of Mt Hotham, Omeo and Falls Ck then back up the east side of the river and return to Corryong via Berringama.
(edit: named the "Dick Ck Doddle" on account of this being the creek in the middle of the Omeo loop section) About 30% hard riding and back in time for tea, having enjoyed brekkie before leaving! We’ll see how we go with that one on the day as lazing around Corryong & environs might also be pretty appealing…..
For Monday Corryong to Batemans Bay I figure the only real choice is Cabramurra (79km); Adaminiby (137km); Cooma (189km); Bemboka (265km); Narooma (365km); Batemans Bay (436km)
or
Some will be going the boring way via Canberra, being Tumbarumba (62km); Tumut (131km); Canberra (280km); Bungendore (315km); Braidwood (363km); Batemans Bay (422km). Marginally shorter but who would want to miss the magic of standing on the rooftop of Cabramurra and the enticing roads to get there? Not I, and I have done it in the freezing rain before and still loved it!
To go home we can choof off up the Kings Hwy and back roads to Goulburn, Razorback, Badgerys Ck, Galston Gorge, F3 - which is 503km of easy riding,
or
Go up the coast through Wollongong with the delightful Coledale cliff rd then the Nasho to Loftus, Olympic Pk, F3 - which is a paltry 429km, of easy riding with a lovely distraction in the middle!
Again, we’ll decide on the day….
I just checked the suggested accommodation again.
